Application guide
For Shunt & Precision Resistor Makers
A shunt is a resistor that has to stay a resistor. What you are buying is not wire — it is a resistance value that does not move.
The three numbers that decide the sale
| Number | Why it matters | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Resistance per metre | Sets the shunt value directly | Measured and printed on every spool label |
| Temperature coefficient | Decides drift under load | Grade selected for the operating range, not the catalogue |
| Batch consistency | Decides whether lot 2 matches lot 1 | Chemistry and anneal held within one process route |
Most quality complaints in this business trace back to the third row. A supplier can hit the resistance on the first lot and miss it on the fourth because the anneal drifted. The fix is process control, not tighter incoming inspection.
Grades we draw for this
| Grade | Resistivity | Where it is used |
|---|---|---|
| 6J12 | ≈ 0.47 µΩ·m | General precision shunts, load banks |
| 6J13 | ≈ 0.43–0.44 µΩ·m | Meter shunts, BMS sensing |
| 6J8 | ≈ 0.42–0.47 µΩ·m | Standard resistors, ratio bridges |
| 6J40 constantan | ≈ 0.49 µΩ·m | Shunts where solderability matters |
Trial lots
Qualification runs are usually 1–5 kg. We take them, because that is how a supplier gets onto a shunt maker's approved list — and how the 200 kg order arrives eighteen months later.
Questions we get asked
Can you hold a resistance tolerance?
Yes, on the measured value per spool. State the target Ω/m and the tolerance band at quotation.
Do you supply cut lengths?
Yes — spool or cut length to your drawing, within the diameter range.
Send the specification — diameter, grade, temper, quantity.
We come back with a confirmed lead time and the documentation we can issue for the shipment. 100 g sample at cost; orders from 1 kg.
